Vintage Car Racing Poster
This vintage poster advertises the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, which was won by the privately entered Ecurie Ecosse Jaguar D-Type. The artwork for the poster was created by the renowned French painter and illustrator Géo Ham.
Race Details
Date: The race took place on 28 and 29 July 1956 at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France.
Winner: Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson drove their Jaguar D-Type (car number 4) for the Ecurie Ecosse team to victory, completing 300 laps.
Podium: Second place went to Stirling Moss and Peter Collins in an Aston Martin DB3S, while Olivier Gendebien and Maurice Trintignant finished third in a Ferrari 625 LM.
Context: Following the fatal disaster of the 1955 race, the track was redesigned with enhanced safety measures, including a modified Dunlop curve and a new signaling pits area to reduce congestion. The 1956 event saw only 13 of the 49 starting cars classified as finishers due to numerous accidents and wet conditions.
