Drawn by Ub Iwerks
The World's Funniest Cartoon Character
A Sensation in Sound and Synchrony
This is a reproduction of a promotional poster for the early Mickey Mouse sound cartoons, which were distributed by Celebrity Productions Inc. in the late 1920s. The most famous of these cartoons is Steamboat Willie, released in November 1928, which is widely considered the public debut of Mickey Mouse and a landmark as one of the first cartoons with synchronized sound.
Key Information
Character Creation: Mickey Mouse was co-created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks after they lost the rights to their previous character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Animation: Ub Iwerks was the chief animator for the early Mickey Mouse cartoons, drawing most of the frames himself at an incredible speed.
Sound Innovation: While two silent Mickey Mouse cartoons (Plane Crazy and The Galloping Gaucho) were produced earlier in 1928, they failed to find a distributor. Steamboat Willie was the third cartoon produced but the first to be distributed, thanks to its groundbreaking use of synchronized sound, which made it a massive success.
