This book is dedicated to Colorado wine country and the exhilarating feeling we get when we find or realize something for the first time. It provides the answer to wine enthusiasts across the country who have asked,"Really? Colorado makes good wine?"
In their defense, when most out-of-staters think of Colorado, their minds jump to Denver, ski resorts, and other spots along the Front Range. They are often less familiar with the western portion of the state, where the high mountain valleys are filled with orchards yielding amazing peaches, cherries, apples, pears, apricots, nectarines, and plums. These luscious fruits owe their extreme sweetness and juiciness to the region's summer climate, which features long sunny days and cool, brisk nights. Colorado peaches and other fruits that make it out of the state for distribution are sought after by foodies and savvy gourmets.
Over the past several decades, vineyards growing European wine grape varieties have been quiet neighbors to the burgeoning fruit orchards. As acreage and the number of wineries has increased, so has the awareness of the potential of Colorado wine. This book was written to help raise this awareness. Colorado wines deserve to be discovered to their fullest, in the land where their grapes grow.
Discovering Colorado Wine Country is written without bias to any winery or business It is meant to be a source of inspiration and information about the region, its surrounding towns and attractions, and the wines in general. It is meant to be a springboard for discovery
From the Publisher
Although I had first visited this region in 1972 with my family, it wasn't until 2020 that I became aware of Colorado's wine regions.
I vividly recall the day when I tasted my first Colorado wine. It was splendid. Since I have an extensive background with California wine and previously published the book, Along the California Wine Trail, I realized that I had an opportunity to share the unique offerings of the Western Slope of Colorado.
Thanks to the patience and creative efforts of writer and editor Wendy van Diver, designer Art Fisher, artist Kerne Erickson, cartographer Scott Westmoreland, and several excellent photographers, Discovering Colorado Wine Country is a book we can hold in our hands. I also want to thank Scott and Juli Mijares to whom I am eternally grateful for reintroducing me to the Western Slope and its many wonders.
My wife, Ashley, and I feel fortunate to have discovered the wines of Colorado's Western Slope, and we are excited to be part of this dynamic community.
