Description

From an Original Color Painting

The painting depicts three nude female figures in a landscape framed by trees, a subject the artist explored in around 200 works throughout his career.
The artist was more interested in the formal composition and structure of the figures and landscape than in conventional beauty or a specific narrative.
The painting was influential on early 20th-century art and was notably acquired by Henri Matisse in 1899, who later donated it to the Petit Palais museum in Paris.
