Description

From an Original Color Painting

The oil-on-canvas painting was created in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in September 1889.
Van Gogh saw the reaper as a symbol of death, with humanity being the wheat that is reaped.
Despite the heavy symbolism, he described the painting as "almost smiling" because the scene takes place in broad daylight with a "light of fine gold," representing the eternal cycle of nature and life.
The original painting is housed at the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands
